Ding Ding… The Christmas Advert Battle Begins
Although we’ve only entered November, the festive frenzy is already underway and this year’s battle for best Christmas advert is well and truly a-go. We’ve been enjoying checking out the contenders, with releases from brands including Aldi, Lidl, Very and Marks & Spencer’s, we already feel spoilt for choice!
Here’s a quick round up of the holiday adverts that have graced the small screen already, and some speculation as to what’s to come.
Aldi has seen the return of Kevin the Carrot this year who, in his on-going search for Santa, takes up a love interest. The advert is sweet and a little bit silly but hey, isn’t that what Christmas is all about?
Aldi’s main competitor Lidl has taken a slightly less frivolous stance and has instead chosen to focus their ad on seasonal products and a traditional Xmas table. Informative yes, but is it slightly lacking the magical touch which makes Christmas adverts so appealing?
Perhaps one of the first Christmas adverts to catch our eye, the charming tagline ‘get more out of giving’, makes it a strong contender for ad of the year. It takes us on a heart-warming journey, ending with a touching moment, which sees the protagonist get her much sought after gift.
Marks and Spencer’s incorporated the much-loved children’s character: Paddington Bear in their ad this year. The advert sees Paddington buddy up with ‘Santa’ to deliver gifts on Christmas Eve, ultimately resulting in him becoming an internet sensation. The advert is funny, charming and full of holiday cheer. Accompanied with the hashtag #LoveTheBear, it gives us all the festive feels.
For the past few years, John Lewis has very much been the undisputed King of Christmas thanks to the heart warming adverts they continually produce. This year #MozTheMonster – a friendly monster who lives under a child’s bed – comes out to play every night and keeps Joe, the adverts main character awake all night.
Cute and definitely full of the fuzzies, but is it festive enough? It doesn’t have the snowy scenery of previous adverts but it definitely marked the start of the Christmas season with the hashtag trending across Twitter on the day of its release.
We’ve just picked a handful of adverts, but what’s your favourite Christmas advert so far this year?
